Vehicle Select car quality standards checklist

All our used cars are reconditioned in line with our standards

We carry out repairs, if needed, to high-use areas including boots and driver's doors, just to name a few.

We also make sure that all audio equipment and safety related items are in full working order.


What to expect from used Vehicle Select cars:

Exterior

Dents

  • All dents over 25mm are repaired.
  • If a car has dents, there will be a maximum of two dents per car panel.
  • There won't be more than five dents across the whole car.
  • All dents that affect paint surface damage are repaired.

Chips

  • Any chips above 3mm with rust, corrosion or down to base metal are repaired.
  • Chip touch ins are level, durable and are a good colour match.

Rust and tarnishing

  • There won't be any rust or tarnishing on the bodywork.
  • Any rust or tarnishing will be removed from the trims, except for water damage tarnishing.

Paintwork

  • All paintwork is free from rust, corrosion, and discoloration.
  • We repair flaking paint, preparation marks, paint contamination, rippled finishes, and poorly matched paint, if visible from two metres away.

Plastic parts

  • Plastic parts with any colour discrepancy are checked against other plastic parts for colour matching.

Lights and lamps

  • All lights and lamps are free from chips and fully working.

Previous repairs

  • We don't sell cars that have had extensive repairs or major accident damage.

Mirrors

  • All mirrors are fully working and free from cracks and distortion.

Interior

Audio

  • All audio equipment is in full working order.

Safety-related items

  • All safety-related items are in full working order, e.g., seat belts and air bags.

Odours

  • All cars are clean, odourless, and free from burns.

Windscreens & glass

Cracks

  • Windscreens are free from cracks which are:
  • Over 10mm in the driver's eyeline (A zone).
  • Over 20mm in any other area of the windscreen.

Scratches

  • Windscreens are free from any scratches in the driver's eyeline (A zone).
  • Any scratches up to 40mm outside of the driver's eyeline are deemed acceptable.

Heated screens

  • If the car has heated front screens they will be fully working.

Wiper blades

  • Front and rear wiper blades:
  • Won't shake or smear the screen.
  • Are free from splits.

Windows

  • Light scratches up to 40mm on the driver and passenger side windows are deemed as acceptable.
  • All tinted windows are free from damage and in line with the current MOT legalisation.

Accessories

Keys

  • All cars:
  • Come with the number of keys shown on our website.
  • Include keys that operate the car remotely and manually.

Floor mats

  • Every car has a full set of matching floor mats that:- Are free from damage.- Are in good condition.- Meet the original manufacturer's standard.

Sat nav

  • If a sat nav has a missing SD card, it will be tagged as missing.
  • SD cards will have a security clip to secure them, where applicable.
  • All sat navs are tested to make sure they're working correctly.

Charging cables

  • Electric cars will have a home charger and a fast charger.
  • Plug-in hybrid cars include a home charger and a street charger.
  • Self-charging hybrid cars don't need a charging cable.

Parcel shelves

  • All cars have a parcel shelf that's in good condition.

Road test

All cars complete a comprehensive road test, as a minimum

Here's what we look out for:

  • Brake efficiency
  • Biting point between the clutch and the accelerator (manual cars only)
  • Rev count efficiency
  • Engine temperature
  • Engine performance
  • Any warning lights
  • Any abnormal noises and feelings
  • Steering health
  • Suspension health
  • Gear health

Tyres, spares & wheels

Tyres

  • All tyres have a minimum tread depth of 3mm across at least 75% of the tyre's width.
  • Tyre treads are visible on the inner and outer edges of the tyre.
  • A tyre's manufacturer specification details are visible on the outside of the tyre, including the brand, size and speed rating.
  • Each tyre is in line with the manufacturer's specification, but tyre brands may differ.
  • If a tyre needs replacing, we match it to a new mid-range equivalent.
  • Tyres on electric cars, SUVs and sports cars are always replaced with new tyres from the same brand.
  • If run-flat tyres are fitted, all the tyres will be run-flats.
  • If a car has winter or all-weather tyres, all four tyres will be the same type.
  • If tyre sealant is included, it will be within eight months of the expiry date.

Spare tyres and repair kits

  • All Vehicle Select cars come with either:
  • A full-sized spare tyre
  • A temporary emergency tyre
  • An emergency tyre sealant kit
  • Run-flat tyres
  • Spare tyres on SUVs, electric and sports cars are replaced with new spare tyres from the same brand.
  • Space saver tyres will be replaced with the same type of tyre.
  • Puncture repair kits will be replaced if required and will be within eight months of the expiry date.
  • All cars come with a full set of locking wheel nuts and a locking wheel nut key.
  • Spare locking wheel nuts are found in the car's boot or glove compartment.

Wheels and trims

  • All alloy wheels and steel rims are free from damage that's more than 25mm in length or 50mm in total across the circumference.

All wheel trims are:

  • Free from scuffs over 25mm in length or 50mm across the circumference.
  • Secure on the wheel.
  • Free from any cracks or distortions.
  • Always matched if they're replaced.

Mechanical

Oil

  • All oil levels:
  • Are checked and topped up, if needed.
  • Will be between halfway and the maximum limit on the car's dipstick or electric display.

Brake pads

  • Brake pads and discs have a minimum pad thickness of:
  • 5mm on the front.
  • 4mm on the rear.
  • We remove the car's wheels during our inspection and measure all brake pads and discs.

MOT & servicing

MOT

  • All cars come with a recent MOT with at least six months left, unless a car is under three years old.

Servicing

  • If required, the engine oil and oil filter is replaced in line with the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • If required, we change the fuel filter and/or spark plugs.
  • If required, we change a car's cambelt (also known as a timing belt).
  • Cambelts have a minimum of six months or 6,000 miles remaining.

Fuel

Fuel & charge

  • All petrol, diesel and hybrid cars have at least 15 litres of fuel when delivered or collected.
  • All electric cars will come with at least 75% charge when delivered or collected.

What a car valet includes:

Remove road tar

  • All road tar is removed from the exterior bodywork by using solvent tar remover.

Spray and pressure wash wheel arches

  • All visible areas of the exterior wheel arches are free from dirt, mud and debris.
  • We also clean the visible areas of carpet lined interior wheel arches.

Spray and pressure wash wheels and tyres

  • All visible areas of the wheels and trims are free from road dirt, tar and brake dust.
  • We also clean the tyre's spokes and bolts if present.
  • Tyre walls and tyre treads are free from mud and dirt.

Engine bay

  • The engine bay is thoroughly cleaned.
  • All areas and parts of the engine, including the underside bonnet and hinges, are thoroughly cleaned.Spray and pressure wash the inside car door and boot shuts, and the fuel filler cap
  • All door edges are free from dirt and grease.
  • All areas of the door shut, including hinges and sills are free from dirt and grease.
  • The interior of the fuel flap and the surrounding area is free from grease and dirt.
  • Electrical charging points are hand cleaned with a damp cloth.

Spray and pressure wash the car's exterior

  • Any bug residue is removed from front facing areas.
  • Bottom sills, grills, chrome, and lower bumper areas are free from grease.
  • Trims, window rubbers and scuttles are free from moss and debris.
  • The exterior of the car is hand washed with ""wash and wax' car shampoo before a final rinse.

Dry all pressure washed areas with a natural leather cloth

  • Door shuts, the engine compartment, fuel filler cap and all exterior bodywork and glass are leather dried and free from dirt and grease.

Any rubbish is removed

  • All door and seat pockets, storage compartments and luggage areas are checked for rubbish.
  • If we find any rubbish or items that aren't part of the car, we remove them.

Interior hard surfaces

  • All trim, storage compartments and pockets, seat surrounds and runners are cleaned and free from dirt, dust, stains, and grease.
  • All switches, vents and joints are cleaned and free from dust and dirt.

Carpets and upholstery

  • Carpets, including floor mats and the boot carpet, the parcel shelf and seat upholstery are cleaned and free from stains that can be removed.

Spare tyre

  • The area where the spare tyre is kept, if present, is wiped clean and vacuumed.

Interior vacuum

  • All carpets, upholstery, storage compartments and pockets are thoroughly vacuumed.
  • This includes under the front and back passenger seats, additional seats, and seat storage wells, if applicable.
  • All loose debris is removed.
  • Carpets and upholstery are free from animal hairs and any other contamination.

Interior glass

  • All interior window glass is cleaned, including the sunroof, the rear view and vanity mirrors, any media screens and instrument panel glass on the dashboard.
  • All glass is dry and free from dirt, streaks and smears.

Anti-bac cabin

  • An antibacterial odour neutraliser is sprayed into the cabin.

Exterior glass

  • All exterior glass is cleaned, including the sunroof, wing mirrors and light covers.
  • All glass is dry and free from dirt, streaks, and smears.

Exterior trim, tyres, and wheel arches

  • A vinyl dressing is evenly applied to all exterior vinyl trim and visible areas of the vinyl wheel arch coverings and tyres.
  • Any excess residue is removed from surrounding areas.

Paintwork and brightwork

  • A wax-based product is applied to all exterior painted surfaces and brightwork trim, e.g. metal trimmings.
  • Any residue is removed.

Door shuts, engine compartment and trims

  • All painted surfaces in the door and boot shuts and engine compartment are dried, buffed, and free from grease or dirt.
  • Hoses, cables, and plastic trim to engine components have a dressing applied which cleans and enhances the area. Any excess dressing is then removed.
  • Trims to grills and exhaust pipes are dried, free from dirt and dust, polished and/or dressed, where applicable.

Protective seat covers and floor mats

  • All cars arrive with protective covers over the front seats and floor mats.
